Dear Parent / Guardian/ Community

As you are likely aware, the School District’s former secretary-bookkeeper has now been arrested and charged with stealing funds from the School District. The School District has been working with the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Investigators and with the Tazewell State’s Attorney’s Office since becoming aware of the misuse and potential theft of District funds back in early August 2025. At that time, discrepancies in the School District’s finances were discovered, which were raised with former secretary-bookkeeper. Very soon thereafter, the former district secretary-bookkeeper's employment with the District was terminated. In addition to working with Tazewell County law enforcement officials since early August, the School District has also been working with its financial auditors and insurance company to investigate these financial discrepancies.

We – the School Board members and I, Superintendent Green – want to assure you that we have been and continue to take all necessary steps to address this situation. Besides promptly contacting law enforcement officials as soon as these financial discrepancies were discovered, the School District also promptly brought in the School District’s accounting firm that handles the audit of the District’s finances. This accounting firm has assisted in the review of all District expenditures and payments made in the months leading up to August 2025 to ensure that all such expenditures and payments were appropriate, while seeking repayment of funds to the District when possible. Additionally, they have assured us that the School District remains on solid financial ground. The School District has completed our work with our insurance company and has received a portion of the lost funds and will be seeking restitution for the remaining misused and stolen funds in the criminal case against the former secretary-bookkeeper.

The Spring Lake CCSD 606 Board of Education and administration value being good stewards of taxpayer dollars and have implemented enhanced financial safeguards that we believe will provide stronger security to protect district finances.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to work through the various issues related to this matter. However, because this matter is still proceeding in Tazewell County Criminal Court, we are unable to provide any further details about this situation at this time.

SuperSTEM returns! 🧠 🧪 This afternoon, our 3rd–6th grade students became animal researchers as they explored SuperSTEM science articles. They read, compared, and analyzed information to identify the main idea and key details about amazing animals from around the world. Students are now creating poster presentations to showcase their learning — stay tuned for their finished products! 🎨📚

Our first and second graders have been studying states of matter. To reinforce the idea that liquids can freeze into solids, students made lemonade slushies!

First grade has been having fun learning about different kinds of energy through hands-on activities! They've explored sound, light, and heat energy. To learn about sound energy, students made cup phones using two cups and a tight string. When a student talked into one cup, the cup and string vibrated, and the sound traveled all the way to the other cup! We learned that sound moves through vibrations and works best when the string is pulled tight. They also investigated heat energy with a colorful experiment. Students watched food coloring mix into hot, room temperature, and cold water. The food coloring spread fastest in hot water, slower in room temperature water, and slowest in cold water. Students learned this happens because heat makes water particles move faster, helping the color spread more quickly. These experiments helped students see, hear, and understand how energy works in the world around them!

A note from PTC: PTC Meeting 12/31– Spaghetti Supper Planning Tomorrow, December 31 at 10:00 AM at the school, the PTC will be holding a meeting to discuss details for the upcoming Spaghetti Supper. If you have time, please come join us. This event is always a big success and is well loved by our community, and we want to work together to make it another great year for our kids and school. If you are unable to attend the meeting but would still like to help with the event, please reach out so we can make sure to connect with you about ways you can help. Remember—without volunteers, these events cannot happen. The Spaghetti Supper helps fund many fun and meaningful activities for our students. Volunteering doesn’t just have to be moms or dads—it can include aunts, uncles, grandparents, older siblings, or anyone in the community who wants to help support our school. We hope to see you there! Thank you, Samantha Trumpy PTC

We wrapped up the last day of school with lots of holiday cheer! Kindergarten enjoyed a fun puzzle exchange, while first and second grades shared the joy with a book exchange. Our K–2 students celebrated with festive party stations, including Pin the Heart on the Grinch, decorating gingerbread houses, Punch a Pine, making reindeer food, and enjoying root beer floats! Students in grades 3–6 also had a wonderful, festive day filled with Christmas fun! They created special gifts for their families, played games, enjoyed party snacks, and had root beer floats with friends. We wish all of our families a safe, restful, and joyful Christmas break. We look forward to welcoming students back to the building on Tuesday, January 6.

Another year of being blessed by Cindy! Ensuring that every Spring Lake student has a hat was a tradition started by her dear friend, Darla, who was both an incredible teacher and person. Darla helped make hats for many students and schools, including ours. In her memory, Cindy has continued this meaningful tradition since Darla’s passing in 2020. We are so grateful for her kindness and generosity. Thank you, Cindy! ❤️
